In the Permian, Waste Control Is Power

Milestone’s latest Permian deal shows how control of waste assets is becoming the industry’s sharpest competitive edge

Milestone Environmental has acquired the Striker slurry injection facility in Lea County, New Mexico, expanding its presence in the Permian Basin and reinforcing its position in one of the US’s most active oil and gas regions.

The deal, effective January 1, 2026, increases Milestone’s network to about 15 facilities across Texas and New Mexico. The Permian has seen sustained drilling activity alongside tighter environmental oversight, increasing demand for reliable waste treatment and disposal services.

By adding the Striker site, Milestone gains greater control over how industrial waste is managed. Ownership of disposal assets reduces reliance on third-party operators and allows companies to adjust more quickly to changes in customer demand and regulatory requirements. The group said the acquisition would strengthen its ability to provide safe, reliable and fully compliant services to energy and industrial clients in the region.

Industry analysts view the transaction as part of a wider consolidation across the US waste management and remediation sector. Large environmental services companies, including Veolia, have expanded hazardous waste capacity through acquisitions in recent years. Control of disposal infrastructure is increasingly seen as a competitive advantage as environmental standards tighten and regulators intensify scrutiny of emerging contaminants.

The expansion also comes with regulatory and operational risks. Injection and disposal facilities are subject to close monitoring, and companies face evolving rules at both state and federal level. Operators seeking growth must demonstrate robust compliance systems and clear engagement with local stakeholders.

Energy producers are under pressure to meet higher environmental expectations while maintaining output. In that context, integrated service providers that combine collection, treatment and disposal under one platform may offer greater efficiency and clearer accountability.

Milestone’s latest acquisition reflects that shift. As the Permian continues to attract investment, ownership of core waste infrastructure is becoming central to how environmental services groups compete and scale.
